I was discussing my plan to start doing lots of routine maintenance on my car (tire rotations, oil change, filters, spark plugs, belts.?) and my dad (apparently now a curmudgeon) rambled about how all the cars nowadays require so many uncommon tools to do jobs that used to be simple, that he seemingly gave up his own work altogether.This stuff can all be done without special tools, although I can't speak for the timing belt on a 2.0 (I think it's a little more involved).

In fact, it's simpler on the TSI than the FSI - oil filter is on top of the engine, engine air filter is easy to get to, spark plug are right there on top of the engone when you pop the plastic engine cover off, looks like accessory belt is easy, and it has a timing chain vice belt. Your dad's right, if you get into some of the electrical stuff, you're getting more complex than in older cars because everything is computer-controlled. And this car does require some odd tools once in a while, like triple-square sockets. Was wondering if it would be possible for someone to forward me the pages on alternator removal?

There is something wrong with my charging system, I just ordered VAGCOM to determine what exactly, but I'm fairly confident its the alternator because when I was installing BSH PCV revamp and boost tap I accidentally knocked a wrench and pulling it back up it bumped the alternator and sparked. Or even better if someone knew of a DIY, and help is appreciated thanks guys!Thread-jacking an old thread about service manuals for an alternator DIY. You shouldn't need a Bentley or VAG-COM to test your alternator. Basic DMM or battery tester if you have access will be fine.
